3 months old

I'm three months old today! Fist bump.

My little Lucy girl, today you are three months old. You are officially no longer a newborn but an infant, and in your three months your growing personality has thrilled us. These three months that have been your whole entire life, for us have been our most life changing. There is nothing more severely amazing than bringing your first baby into the world and getting pummeled by that kind of love.

You have learned how to do so many things, like smile, which has redefined our lives. THIS is why we are here. You have started laughing – a laugh where you show your gums and shrug your shoulders. You have found your hands which amaze you, you now have extra creases on your arms and legs and a dimple on your elbow, and though a little wobbly, you can hold up your head. And you have achieved some unfathomable blow outs.

You have lost some newbornness though, which is bittersweet. I want to remember it all, but somehow in only three months it’s fading from my memory… Your quiet newborn “laa laa” cry has changed. You used to let us know you were awake by popping your legs up trying to be breech, and in your little pink swaddler you looked like a tiny shrimp. Now you sleep soundly with your legs flat, very much adapted to life out of the womb. You have doubled your weight since your smallest at 5.5 lbs, and seeing how tiny you still are, I can’t even imagine how tiny you were in the hospital. I have forgotten.

But as you get older I get to see how awesome your personality is - and it amazes me that it’s completely your own. I love that you have found your voice, and when we speak to you, you focus and talk back with Ooh’s, Boo’s and squeaks. And your facial expressions kill us when you do this.  If I ever divert my attention to something else, you’ll watch me patiently until I look back and then smile so hard you have to turn your head. Sorry that from now on I’ll be the lady with the video camera permanently affixed to her hand…

But still I don’t think I could capture it all. I will always think of these first three months when I see you. When we someday meet as adults, when your childhood eyes disappear and you see us for our strengths and weaknesses, when we someday talk as friends, you will still be the one that made us a family. The one who cracked open a whole new world we never knew existed. You will always be our baby girl.

We love you to smithereens, Lucy Lu!  Happy 3 month birthday!
