Vacation > separation anxiety

Sorry for the silence. It has been busy over here! I work full time, and work has been hectic lately. Also I have this little 10-month old who keeps me rather tied up. And I have been indulging in a social life and also downtime with the hubs. The blog suffers!

Not that I’m complaining, because all is good, all is good. The hubs and I just came back from a much needed weekend away in New Orleans for Jazzfest. For 3 days. WITHOUT LUCY. So that means the other thing I have been doing while not blogging, Jazzfesting, working, and taking care of Lucy is FREAKING OUT ABOUT LEAVING HER FOR THE FIRST TIME.  Understand that it is nerve-wracking, people.

We certainly had no lack of faith in Lucy’s stand-in care-takers (Nat’s parents), but never having BOTH left her for longer than a dinner date or a wedding, we were nerves. Nat less so than me, but even he blurted out that perhaps we should take her with us. (But we quickly realized that while we WOULD like to expose Lucy to the hippie spirit, we would NOT like to subject her to hippie logistics. Or our obnoxious sense of humor after hurricanes on Bourbon Street. Or the make-out session that would have commenced as Lionel Richie took the stage had we not missed that concert.)

And we knew it would be ridiculous to let our nerves get the best of us, and that all-in-all the experience would be good for Lucy and good for us. So the morning of our flight, I peeked in on a sleeping baby with a lump in my throat, gave her a smooch, and flew 1300 miles away.

We only called for updates twice per day, and each time Nat’s parents assured us that everything was going swimmingly… happy baby, great eater, good sleeper, lovely and playful and everyone having fun. Now one might suspect that I’d react to the positive report with: THEY’RE LYING TO US. OBVIOUSLY SHE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT US AND THEY’RE JUST TRYING TO KEEP US CALM. WE MUST GO BACK. But the truth is that Nat and I were actually having a wonderful/important time focusing on us as a couple, with no curfew to release the nanny or babysitter, and guilt-free drinks (because who wants to stumble in at home and be like HI BEHBEH ITSSS YER MOM *hic*). It was so nice, and so easy when we knew she was having fun.

LOTS of fun, actually. Her Gran and Pop Pop had so many fun activities planned that when Nat and I came home all like LUCY WE’RE BACK! WE CAN GO HOME NOW! She was kinda like NAH I’M GOOD, I PREFER THESE PEOPLE TO YOU GUYS, THE TV, AND A TINY APARTMENT.

A really successful weekend and some important lessons learned:
  • Lucy is a capable and independent baby, and we should not stifle this with worry-wartism.
  • Being a parent is #1, but it is important to take time as a couple.
  • I greatly enjoy a good glass of moonshine.
And of course… BIG BIG thank you’s to Gran & Pop Pop!
